Armington began talking to city residents in fall 2004,
after she received a Minnesota State Arts Board grant for the project. She
interviewed residents in English, asking them:
Is this home for you? After the interview, participants wrote in their native languages something from the conversation. Armington then took bits of these writings, enlarged or shrunk them and collaged them all over a giant geographically-accurate map she had drawn on the three-panel canvas. She painted the whole map, mixing writings by residents all over, with the idea that anywhere we go in the Twin Cities we can meet people from different backgrounds. These are all bits of the conversations that I had; like conversations that anyone could have who travels through the cities. |
