Creating a Community Mandala
3:00-4:00 pm in the Rotunda of the
Target Wing of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts,
FREE! All are welcome.
part of the Sacred Salon Series,
Minneapolis Institute of Arts
Inspired by the Tibetan sand mandala,
Susan Armington and Leslie Ball will lead a workshop to create a
transient community mandala that proceeds from the outer world inward,
marking each level by symbolic objects about participants lives and
hopes for the future. The resulting patterned circle will remain on
view for the remainder of the day, till its elements are swept up and
returned for reuse in the world. Music to inspire us by Leslie Ball.
If you wish, you may bring a small
object that fits in the palm of your hand to symbolize something you
want to let go.

This
workshop focuses on deepening the sense of connection to the natural
world and to a particular place through outdoor art-making. Led by
artist Susan Armington and artist/biologist Bonnie Ploger, we will use
an intuitive process to gather natural objects and make outdoor art on the grounds. We will reflect on our creations

In this workshop we will build small
shelters--for our inner selves, for our relationships with others and as
a dwelling for the sacred. We'll explore interiors and exteriors and the
ways in which different surfaces and materials can offer space for
dialogue and a space to build our visions. We will create "portable
sanctuaries" using mixed media, papers, fabrics, beads and imagination.

Creation of Community “Water Map” at the
Weisman Art Museum,
June 26, 2012.
As part of a Community Day with the
Weisguides, I created an 11' x7'
collaborative map of Water Stories with
visitors who cut out bodies of water that were special
to them, and wrote one-line stories about what they did
there. I added the water shapes and handwritten stories
to a mixed media map that was exhibited in the Fiterman
Gallery at the
Weisman Art Museum.
